What actually makes the person Obese?

Obesity has become a major health problem across the globe as it leads to some serious ailments like:

  • Hypertension
  • Coronary heart diseases
  • Type II Diabetes.

BMI- Body Mass Index

A person is termed as Obese when his Body mass index exceeds 30. BMI is calculated from a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his height (in meters). We become more cautious about the calories and cholesterol content in each and every food we eat.

What makes the person Obese?

  • The primary reason is lack of exercise associated with heavy food intake.
  • In some persons, heredity also plays significant role in causing Obesity. Eating excess food with more calories and more cholesterol and remaining in sitting positions throughout the day leads to accumulation of excess fat in the body.
  • During exercise, body becomes tired and needs more energy, to compensate that, energy will be produced by converting the glycogen into glucose which is lodged in the muscle tissues. Hence by doing exercise, we can avoid Obesity and Diabetes too.

Role of Ayurveda

Obesity has been regarded as one of the Ashta Nindhitha Purusha (undesirable body Physique) in Ayurveda. Ayurveda suggests herbal drugs which have the ability to cause natural cellular death of fat cells and can prevent the formation of new fat cells.

Ways to handle Obesity

  • To reduce excess weight, obese people have to drink water before food and should not eat a full stomach.
  • If we consider the stomach has 4 parts, only 2 parts of the stomach should be filled with food, and one part should be left for water and one part of air, this discipline will assist in proper digestion of fat and prevents its accumulation.
  • Ayurveda also recommends exercises that induce sweating of the body.
