Best Essential Oils to Get Long and Shiny Hair

Essential oils – a brief

When oil is extracted from distilling (using steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant, it is termed an essential oil. Contrary to the word “oil”, these oils are never oily by texture, because they are the extracts of different parts of a plant for different uses and benefits and distilling drives away the oiliness in it. While most of the essential oils are colorless, a few like patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.

Since these essential oils are the direct essence of a plant, they are often concentrated and have to be mixed with the right oil base for use. A small bottle of essential oil will go a long way in terms of usage and preserving.

Essential oils smell exactly of the plant’s origin and this doesn’t mean they are oils used for fragrance. Those which come for fragrance have the artificial essence while essential oils are plant extracts themselves.

You must have read above that essential oils have to be mixed with the right base oil for use. These base oils are referred to as “carrier oils”.

Carrier oils – a brief

Carrier oils are vegetable oils attained from the fatty parts of a plant; which may include its kernel, seeds, nuts etc. and are ideal oils that can dilute essential oils. The reason being, carrier oils are not very concentrated as essential oils are. They will not burn or irritate your skins, which essential oils can, because they are concentrated. Coconut oil, olive and almond oil are the famous carrier oils.

How to use essential oils?

Choose the essential oil to be mixed. Add 5 drops of essential oil to 10 ml of carrier oil, and mix them together. Then pour the blend to your hand, rub your palms together and then work it on your scalp, and not your hair. Gently massage your scalp and help the oil penetrate.

Leave the blend on your hair overnight if possible and then shampoo it out the next morning.

You could also choose to add 5-10 drops of your essential oil to fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner and use it for best effects.
