8 Amazing Health Benefits of Nutmeg

Nutmeg, the aromatic spice has been used for ages now in sweets and savouries for its aroma and unique tinge of taste. The Indian ladoos, especially, have a unique flavour and taste to it when a bit of nutmeg is grated in the dough before making them.

Apart from the kitchen specialty, nutmeg was also earlier used for various other health reasons like relieving pain, soothing indigestion, strengthening cognitive function, detoxifying the body, boosting skin health, alleviating oral conditions, reducing insomnia, increasing immune system function, and in preventing leukaemia, and improving blood circulation. A concoction made of nutmeg was go-to health syrup for ancestors. This being said, even today nutmeg can be put to various use for various health benefits. Do keep in mind that this spice can be used only in minimal quantities, over usage of the spice could cause heart related ailments.

If you’ve been unable to sleep, then call for nutmeg. In the olden days, grannies put kids to sleep in no minutes. Did you know how? Nutmeg was the secret ingredient. They would dust just a pinch of nutmeg into warm milk and feed the kids with the milk just before putting them to bed. And, they would doze off like that!

Do remember, you just have to add lesser than 1/3rd of a teaspoon of the nutmeg powder for driving away insomnia in kids and elders. Over dosage will cause heart problems.

Improve the immunity

If you would like to add a dash of trace minerals like potassium, calcium, iron and manganese into your diet, add less than quarter teaspoon of nutmeg powder into the food you prepare. It will also enhance the taste of the food and increase the mineral availability for your body.

Keep that skin clear

Nutmeg comes handy for clearing away skin pigmentation, for skin lightening and for clearing skin acne. All you’ll have to do is with a pinch of nutmeg powder, add in water and honey and make a face mask. Spread this onto your face and leave it for 15 minutes before you can wash your face with plain water. Doing this treatment for a few days will result in clear, scar free and beautiful looking skin!
