Natural Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Common Cold

Have you ever called your granny’s home based remedy for common cold a hoax? I’m sure many of you out there have branded home remedies for cold as “myths”. But to our surprise, the basic ingredients our ancestors used to prepare a home based medicine for curing cold has been the source to many modern day medicines. A few such natural ayurvedic home remedies for common cold have been mentioned below. Follow these and you’re sure to find them wonderfully effective than the normal antibiotics and anti-allergy tablets you are inclined to.

1. The homemade vapourub

Have you ever wondered about the formulation of these modern day vapourubs sold under a familiar brand name? Their ingredient list contains of what our grannies used on us, but with a touch of chemical to help store it over months together. Why opt for the artificial vapourub, when the original recipe is here: Heat a teaspoon of coconut oil, switch off the stove and add in a bit of camphor to the oil. Mash it with a spoon, so that it becomes a part of the oil. Transfer this to a small vapourub box and let it overnight to set. The next morning you will see your homemade vapourub ready and set! Go ahead and apply generous quantities of your proud DIY to even a small kid and relief is assured.

3. Herbal tea

A packet of herbal ingredients dried and processed is available today in sachets, so that you can add it to a steaming cup of water and indulge in an herbal tea. But we assure, nothing can beat this wonderful freshly prepared herbal tea. Boil a pot of water, throw in freshly plucked mint, an one inch long ginger (peeled and grated) and tulsi leaves. You can spice up the drink by adding in a teaspoon of powdered pepper. Let it boil in simmer. Once all the ingredients have infused and seeped, strain out the tea, add a dollop of honey and get going. You’ll truly feel relieved from your cold congestion and rejuvenated like never before!

3. Homemade cough syrup

How many of you have fallen prey to those bottled cough syrups with a natural ayurvedic ingredient’s name for curing your cold and congestion? Don’t fall prey to them anymore. You homemade cough syrup is simple to make. Ginger, tulsi and garlic will give you the perfect recipe to clear out the congestion. Peel and grate ginger, chop tulsi leaves and peel and chop garlic as well. Mash all these ingredients together and sauté them in a teaspoon of organic ghee. Cool down the mixture and spoon it at one go. It is better to take this remedy just before bedtime and go to bed. The next morning you’ll be sure to find relief from cold.

4. Clear away that sputum in no time

Boil a few peppercorns in water; say about 20 minutes. Then spoon in a teaspoon of cumin seeds and grated jiggery. Switch off the stove, strain the liquid and indulge in a steaming cup of this decoction. In a couple of hours, you’ll realise that you’ve put an end to the sputum that has been troubling you for a long time now.

5. The masala milk

Here is the recipe to a yummy glass of herbal milk that everyone would love. In one glass of warm milk, stir in a teaspoon of turmeric powder and powdered pepper. Add in sugar to taste and you’re done. This spicy-sugary milk will be the favourite for a kid till an adult. The effect of turmeric and pepper in milk will give you immense relief.
